On Tuesday, March 7th, Montgomery Co. Council Members Will Jawando, Kristin Mink and Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, alongside community organizations and advocates will hold a press conference to introduce The Housing Opportunity, Mobility and Equity (HOME) Act.
The act is reported to help keep renters in their homes by preventing rent gouging, reducing displacement, and creating cost predictability for renters and landlords. In addition, the act sets a limit on annual rent increase for units to follow the county’s Voluntary Rent Guidelines (VRG) or 3 percent, whichever is lower.
Renters in our county face great uncertainty in housing costs. Temporary rent stabilization protections expired last August, and we now average 300+ evictions scheduled monthly, compared to 35 last February. – Kristin Mink
The HOME Act has received widespread support from community organizations, and advocacy groups Many argue that the act is a crucial step towards creating a more just and equitable housing system.
With our renting population and income inequality continuing to increase, this is a common sense measure to provide stability and consistency for everybody, our renters, landlords, and developers. – Will Jawando
